What is Einkorn Flour?

Einkorn flour is a type of ancient grain flour that is made from einkorn wheat, one of the oldest varieties of wheat in existence. Einkorn wheat has been cultivated for thousands of years and is known for its rich nutty flavor and nutritional benefits. It is high in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients such as magnesium, zinc, and iron. It also contains less gluten than modern wheat varieties, making it easier to digest for some people with gluten sensitivities. In addition to its nutritional benefits, einkorn flour is prized by bakers for its unique flavor profile. It has a sweet and slightly earthy taste that can enhance the flavor of baked goods like breads, muffins, cookies, and pancakes.

Equipment

  • 8×8 baking pan – I love using the USA-brand baking pans. They have sharp edges and give you a straight edge on your brownie. (This is not sponsored, I just really love their pans.)
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Silicone spatula
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • ½  cup butter melted (1 stick)
  • 1⅛ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • ½  cup all purpose einkorn flour – You can substitute for any all-purpose flour. If you are using whole wheat einkorn flour you will need additional flour until the consistency looks correct. Usually, you will need 3/4 cup flour if using whole wheat einkorn.
  • ½  cup dutch cocoa powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

How to Make the Best Homemade Einkorn Brownies

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Add the melted butter, sugar, salt, and vanilla in a mixing bowl. Whisk until it is well combined.

3. Add the eggs to the mixture. Whisk for 2 minutes or until the batter turns to a lighter color. This step is very important. Beating the eggs in thoroughly will give you the crackly top on your brownies.

4. Next, add the flour and cocoa powder to the mixture and use a silicone spatula to gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet. Do this until everything is well combined.

5. Line the 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper. (If you’re not using parchment paper grease the baking dish.) Pour the batter into the lined or greased baking dish. Spread out the batter evenly.

6. Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. Do not overbake your brownies. If you insert a toothpick into the brownies there will be a small amount on the toothpick. If you want your brownies gooey then do not bake longer than 30 minutes. If you do not want gooey brownies bake longer until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

7. Allow to cool 10-15 minutes before serving.

Add-Ins for Einkorn Brownies

Brownies are a classic dessert that can be enjoyed on their own, but sometimes it’s fun to mix things up and add in some extra ingredients for added flavor and texture. Here are some delicious add-ins you can try in your next batch of brownies:

1. Chocolate Chips: Adding chocolate chips to brownie batter will give you double chocolate einkorn brownies. It is a simple way to enhance the chocolatey goodness of the dessert. You can use dark, milk, or white chocolate chips depending on your preference.

2. Nuts: Chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds add a nice crunch to brownies and provide an additional layer of flavor. Toasting the nuts before adding them to the batter can also enhance their nuttiness.

3. Caramel Swirls: Drizzling caramel sauce over the brownie batter and swirling it with a toothpick creates a pretty swirl design but also adds so much flavor.

4. Cream cheese: Adding cream cheese mixed with a little sugar and vanilla onto the top of your brownie batter and then swirling it in with a toothpick can take your brownies up another notch.

How to Store Einkorn Brownies

Brownies should be stored in an airtight container or ziplock bag. They can be stored at room temperature and last up to 3 days. If stored in the refrigerator they will last up to 5 days.

FAQ’s

Does einkorn flour bake differently?

No, as long as you are using all-purpose einkorn flour in place of any other all-purpose flour it will bake the same. The same for einkorn whole wheat flour and regular whole wheat flour.

Why did my brownies not turn out gooey?

The most common mistake made when it comes to getting cake like brownies when you want gooey brownies is overmixing, overbaking, or using too much flour. Assess what you did when making the brownies and adjust for next time.

In conclusion, einkorn brownies are a delicious and nutritious alternative to traditional brownies. With their unique flavor profile and health benefits, they are sure to be a hit with anyone who tries them. Whether you are looking for a gluten-free option or simply want to try something new, einkorn brownies are definitely worth adding to your list of favorite recipes.
