We used to have a restaurant in our town that served a delicious Italian ham sub but not too long ago it permanently closed its doors. It wasn’t long before we were craving the sub so I set out on a mission to recreate it. After weeks of making the sub and trying out different brands and ingredients, I think I finally have it nailed down. This isn’t just an ordinary ham sandwich we are going to elevate a simple sandwich into a delicious sub sandwich.

Equipment

  • Cast iron skillet – It doesn’t have to be a cast iron skillet any skillet will work.
  • Spatula
  • Plate
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Ham Sub Ingredients

  • Sub buns – We prefer to use sub buns but you could also use a hoagie bun.
  • Ham – Choosing the right ham is going to be important. Based on the ham you choose it will change the flavor and taste of your sub. Some of the ham I have used before and have loved is classic black forest ham and hickory smoked. To get the best ham and cheese sub the better quality ham you buy the better. We prefer boneless sliced ham. Kentukcy Legend has delicious ham but another great option is Boars Head ham.
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese – Sliced mozzarella cheese also pairs perfectly.
  • Thousand island dressing
  • Lettuce – Either leaf lettuce or shredded lettuce will work.
  • Tomato – Sliced
  • Butter – For buttering your skillet and bun.
  • Salt – For topping the sandwich.

How to Make The Perfect Ham Sub

1. Prep your ingredients by slicing the tomato, cutting up the ham to sandwich size, and washing and cutting the lettuce.

2. Add butter to your skillet Over low to medium heat and let it begin to melt. Tear the sub bun in half and place in the skillet face down. Rub the buns around to ensure they soak up the butter. Once the buns get golden brown remove them from the skillet and put them on a plate.

3. Cover the buns with mozzarella cheese and let it begin to melt.
