Biscuits are a baked good that have been enjoyed for centuries. They are typically small, flat, and round, with a slightly crispy texture on the outside and a soft, fluffy interior. Biscuits can be sweet or savory, depending on the recipe and ingredients used.

Today I am finally sharing my tried and true homemade biscuit recipe! These biscuits are the perfect all-around biscuit. We use them for gravy and biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, and serve them as a side with dinners. They have the perfect golden brown outside with a soft fluffy inside. They are easy to make and require only simple ingredients. Many other biscuit recipes I have tried never turn out right but after fine-tuning this recipe I have never had a bad batch. I would dare say these biscuits are fail-proof.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Make Baking Powder Biscuits

  • Milk (cold)
  • All purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Salt

Tools You’ll Need

  • Bowl
  • Cast iron skillet or ungreased cookie sheet
  • Cheese grater or knife

How To Make Baking Powder Biscuits

Preheat oven. In a large mixing bowl combine the flour (I like to sift my flour but that is optional), salt, and baking powder. Mix thoroughly.

Using a cheese grater, grate the cold butter and add to the dry ingredients in the bowl. If you do not have a cheese grater use a knife to cut the butter into small chunks.

Add the milk to the mixture of other ingredients and begin mixing. I like to use my hands for this part to thoroughly combine the mixture.

Once thoroughly mixed, turn the dough onto a pastry table or lightly floured surface and roll out the dough about an inch thick. I use my hands but you can use a rolling pin if preferred. Cut out biscuits using a biscuit cutter or a cup with straight edges.

Place cut out biscuits in a cast iron skillet or on a baking sheet and bake for 10 – 12 minutes at 350°F. Whatever you bake the biscuits on needs to have a tall edge because due to the butter content some of the butter will melt out of the biscuits during the baking process.

We enjoy our biscuits most when they are fresh out of the oven. They are crispy on the outside with the softest warm inside. We enjoy adding jellies and jams and having them as a snack. From breakfast to dinner, biscuits can be enjoyed at any time of day and can be paired with a variety of condiments and toppings. So next time you’re looking for a delicious treat or side dish, consider making some homemade biscuits – your taste buds will thank you!

Q&A Baking Powder Biscuits

How to store biscuits?

Biscuits should be stored in a ziplock bag or a container in a cool dry place.

How long do the biscuits last?

If stored properly biscuits can last up to a week.

How to reheat biscuits?

Biscuits can be placed in the oven at 200°F for 10 minutes or until they are heated all the way through.

Can I use powder milk in place of milk?

Yes. Follow the directions per the powdered milk and substitute 1 cup of powdered milk in place of 1 cup of milk.

Can I use a different type of flour?

Yes. Based on the type of flour you will need to adjust the recipe accordingly. Some flours are wetter or dryer than all purpose so you will need to increase or decrease the amount of milk based on the flour type. If you are using self rising flour then there is no need to add in the baking powder.

Why are my biscuits so dry?

If your biscuits are dry then more than likely you added too much flour. Next time when making the biscuits try decreasing the amount of flour used by ¼ until you get your desired consistency.

How can I get flaky layers?

Flaky layers are made by folding over the dough. When you roll out the dough simply fold the dough in half over itself and press it back out. Repeat this step 3-5 times based on how flaky you want your biscuits.
